BACKGROUND
Africa No Filter is an initiative of a donor collaborative funded by Ford Foundation, Bloomberg, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Luminate and Open Society Foundations.
We are a donor collaborative that supports the development of nuanced and contemporary stories that shift existing, stereotypical narratives within and about Africa. Through research, grant making and advocacy we aim to build the field of narrative change makers by supporting storytellers, investing in media platforms and driving disruption campaigns. ANF’s goal over time is to leave an empowered narrative change ecosystem and an informed community of storytellers who work more deliberately to change harmful narratives within and about Africa.

Our priorities are:

  • Advocacy and Advisory interventions: where we elevate knowledge of storytelling and narrative in Africa for ANF outcomes and foster networks and collaborations to build a stronger narrative change eco-system
  • Research: where we scope the Culture and Creative sector to identify the ANF community, potential partners and opportunities for collaboration. We aim to better understand narrative by addressing questions that unpack African narratives and explore the impact on
    key development issues
  • Grant Making: where we invest in content creation, dissemination platforms and disruption campaigns as well as ANF programs, initiatives to support Creative communities and build the narrative change ecosystem

SENIOR MANAGER, COMMUNICATIONS: ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Senior Communications Manager is responsible for ensuring we amplify the work of the creative community we support, our grantees in the narrative change ecosystem, the research we invest in and the ANF brand. The role will also include grant making to media organisations aligned to our mission. ANF is in start-up mode and requires someone that is entrepreneurial in nature and highly
networked with the ability to innovate rapidly. He/she will be expected to create engaging content, strategic design, a range of on-line & off-line communication policies, press materials, articles, and both traditional and social media opportunities to share the ANF vision and brand. The ideal candidate must be an excellent communicator, with strong presentation and organizational skills along with knowledge of the research, arts, entertainment, and culture sectors across Africa.

KEY TASKS INCLUDE:

Strategic Communications:

  • Ability to develop and execute a strategic communications plan in line with the ANF mission.
  • Manage the corporate communications, digital, public affairs, press office and e-marketing communication strategies.
  • Manage all external agencies and consultants focused on communications, this includes strategy creation, implementation, budgeting, and quality control.

Public Relation Skills:

  • Ability to write and place media releases/opinion pieces/articles in targeted publications across sub Saharan Africa.
  • Excellent media relationships in Africa.
  • Negotiate sponsorships and media partnerships, in line with the mission of the organization.
  • Identify appropriate print and social media channels for targeted campaigns and outreach, while establishing an effective presence in trade magazines, traditional media outlets and social media sites.
  • Optimize print, social media and blog campaigns to generate interaction, brand exposure, and partnership opportunities.
  • Prepare detailed media activity reports and content calendar plans.
  • Manage the ANF newsletter with targeted distribution to various stakeholders.
  • Create, update, and manage targeted media lists.
  • Manage all influencer engagements while supervising databases, outreach and in some instances the creation of specific lists relevant to ANF priorities.

Digital Skills:

  • Digital strategist who thinks digital first with a strong understanding of the intersection between traditional and social communication efforts.
  • Knowledge and experience of building and maintaining a digital community.
  • Deep knowledge of social media platforms and how to utilize them for the best outcomes on behalf of ANF.
  • Experience of overseeing digital projects in different African countries.

Grant Making:

  • Knowledge of grant making to the media sector and beyond.
  • Ability to monitor and evaluate grants while tracking impact and outcomes.

REQUIRED PROFILE

Qualifications and skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations or a relevant field.
  • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar role.
  • Proven experience creating targeted content and getting it posted/published.
  • Strong knowledge of communication practices and techniques.
  • Experience working in a communications agency and/or managing one is an asset.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be able to multitask and work well under pressure.
  • Excellent organizational and leadership abilities.
  • Experience developing and implementing high level communication strategies.
  • Ability to multitask and project manage.
  • Entrepreneurial, fast paced problem solver with the ability to think strategically.

RESEARCH LEAD: ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ANF is a new organisation and will require a Strategy/Research lead that is entrepreneurial in nature,
highly networked, with the ability to innovate rapidly in line with strategy development. We have an ambitious research agenda which will inform ANF strategies, provide learning for the donor collaborative, the eco-system and beyond as well stimulate and elevate discussions around African narrative. The Strategy/Research lead role is key to informing and measuring ANF’s overall impact and strategic priorities. A key part of this body of work will be developing research partnerships and grants that prioritise dissemination of the research. Through existing literature reviews, polling, social and new media analysis and academic research this position will focus on developing research solutions that unpack narrative and explores the impact of negative and positive narratives on key development issues

Key tasks include:

  • Support the executive director in strategic planning for ANF’s mid to long term strategy Assist with the design and development of project management systems for the work
  • Guide and conduct quality control standards for the implementation of project activities and funding initiatives.
  • Develop collaterals to help effectively disseminate strategies to internal and external stakeholders
  • Conceptualize and manage strategy and research projects including overseeing timelines, budgets, impact, conclusions and final evaluation
  • Engage in stakeholder dialogue and foster collaborative solution-building to advance strategic goals
  • Build effective relationships across Africa No Filter, donors, grantees and externally.
  • Oversee budgets and financial management performance of all strategy and research related projects.
  • Develop a research strategy for ANF and manage the full ecosystem of ANF’s strategy and research needs to support the organizations programmatic goals.
  • Identify project goals, research methods, variables and other parameters while leading in data collection and final outputs.
  • Identify partners from academia, development institutions, corporate and research organisations, think tanks to co-fund, co-brand or support research projects
  • Lead a coalition of partners to shape research projects and deliver project goals.
  • Develop and make recommendations on how to disseminate research findings to key stakeholders, donors, grantees, media etc.
  • Generate new ideas for fundable, change-focused research projects and recommendations to bring these ideas to market.
  • Create high quality research proposals based on requirements from donors, funders and other key stakeholders.

REQUIRED PROFILE

Qualifications and skills:

  • Prior academic and/or work experience should demonstrate the ability to manage projects from start to finish, produce written analytic products, and demonstrate an affinity for working with data and statistics.
  • A graduate degree in Business Strategy, Public Policy, Research or a related field is required.
  • 8 years of relevant work experience as an analyst/researcher within a research/policy organization, think-tank, foundation, academic institution, or consulting firm. At least 2 – 3 years in a consulting role.
  • Understanding the arts and culture landscape in Africa is a plus with previous experience working across the continent.
  • Experience writing reports and documents for further distribution across various stakeholder groups.
  • Exceptional communication skills—both written and oral—and the ability to translate research into relevant and actionable messages.
  • Superb project management and organizational skills, including attention to detail and the ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to lead small teams and to complete tasks with limited oversight and supervision.
  • Ability to interact with high-level individuals and organizations.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills: collegial, energetic, flexible, motivated, and able to develop productive relationships with colleagues, grantees, consultants, and others who contribute to program development and management.

PROGRAM OFFICER: ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
ANF is a new organisation and will require a Program Officer that is entrepreneurial in nature, highly networked, with the ability to innovate rapidly in line with strategy development. The role requires someone with knowledge of community building and connections across multiple African countries from years of impactful work in this sector. The role will administer a portfolio of grants to individuals and intermediaries in the narrative change and cultural & creative sector to advance the ANF mission. Primary tasks range from grant making to grant management to the review and analysis of funding requests, while actively contributing to the overall growth and strategic development of the organization. He/she will engage in research projects, evaluation programs, convenings, and conferences that support ANF’s partner base and align with its mission.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Grant making to advance strategies in the Cultural and Creative sector as well as the narrative change sector, including research, outreach, and preparing written recommendations to the ANF Managing Partners
  • Oversight of and input into the media partnerships grant making portfolio
  • Develop network to source new grantees and partners to create a pipeline of young and emerging new creators
  • Build a strong network of narrative changemakers to create shared vision and goal around narrative change work in Africa
  • Collaborating internally to develop grant guidelines; publicizing grant opportunities; soliciting proposals; supporting application processes; preparing internal grant proposals and reviews; monitoring grant progress
  • Guiding applicants and grantees throughout grant development and monitoring processes.
  • Develop and organize grantee and partner convenings, support research and help field building in the sector.
  • Enhance public understanding of ANF’s strategic goals through social media posts and other communication channels
  • Promote and model excellent external relations with grantees and partners.
  • Participate in external meetings and conferences to support learning and dissemination of program work

Education, Training, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience in Africa in the Creative, Arts & Culture and Content sector or related grant making
  • Experience in administration and/or public policy work related to the arts and culture sector.
  • Understanding of trends and policies, advocacy, and developing partnerships in field.
  • Proficiency with MS Office including PowerPoint, Excel, and graphic representation skills.

Additional competences:

  • Proficient use of MS word excel and power point.
  • Strong written and verbal English skills, knowledge of other African languages is an asset. Knowledge of French is preferred
  • An interdisciplinary mindset, the ability to cooperate and work in a team, a high degree of initiative and a willingness to take responsibility.
