The story of Africa continues to be defined by stereotypes and negative perceptions that point to a continent where conflict, poor leadership, disease, corruption and poverty prevail. Besides lacking nuance and authenticity, the prevailing narrative about the continent belies its rich heritage, creativity and innovative spirit.
At Africa No Filter, we know that narrative matters. It shapes perceptions about the continent and its people — we believe that it’s time to present a perspective that’s nuanced and authentic. We want to support creative practitioners, hubs, organisations and initiatives that understand the importance of nuanced, progressive, creative and innovative storytelling about Africa to shift stereotypical narratives.
Operational support grants are awarded to organisations within the Arts, Culture and Media sector who are supporting contemporary narratives of Africa through programme delivery, job creation, residences, networking opportunities, as well as training and capacity building for creatives, artists, and journalists on the continent.
