Khalid Ozavogu Abdul is an independent travel documentary photographer and filmmaker based in Abuja, Nigeria. He believes that photography and filmmaking can inform, educate, and shape narratives, so he is using them to challenge what people think about his country and its people.

He founded WakaSnapNG to create a community of advanced and beginner photographers. He has also appeared on platforms such as TEDx, Social Media Week Lagos, Abuja Int’l Photo Festival, Lagos Photo Festival and several others.

His $1800 funding will produce the second season of Gembu Vlogs, a travel series set around the Mambilla Plateau region of Nigeria.

"The Kekere Grant serves as an encouragement to myself and the team, knowing a support system exists to enable us further this project. Being a recipient of this grant also gives the opportunity to be part of a bigger cause as one of the Africans changing the narratives and telling the true African stories on a bigger scale."

He added that the grant will also give him the opportunity to learn more about the unique cultural landscape of Nigeria. "We only have one home, one identity, one Africa and I think it's time we start to treat it as such — first and foremost, by telling our own stories and changing the narratives that have long skewed the African history and identity."
