Jante Juma

Jante Juma is a multi-disciplinary creative artist based in Nairobi, Kenya. Jante has worked on photography and film projects, including the award-winning feature film, Why U Hate. She was also part of The Great Caravan in 2019. It’s a movement of African creatives travelling and collaborating to create art that shifts stereotypes.

Her $1700 grant will produce a photo book that showcases Nairobi’s contemporary art scene and some artists who make it vibrant. “While witnessing the #VogueChallenge, all I saw was an uprising from creatives who have for so long been excluded from the conversation and yet have so much artistic skill to offer. This project seeks to start a culture of documenting and appreciating our homegrown artists and talents,” she said

The photobook will feature different creatives who are changing the perspective of Africa through their work. The photobook will feature artist interviews, photography and illustrations.

"For so long, stories and images of Africa have been told and shared in a way that takes rather than build. The stories of the hunt will always glorify the hunter until the lion learns to write.  The idea to create a photo book that documents our artists is a step towards the lion learning to write. While witnessing the hashtag vogue challenge, all I saw was an uprising from creatives who have for so long been excluded from the conversation and yet have so much artistic skill to offer. This project seeks to start a culture of documenting and appreciating our homegrown artists and talents. It saddened me to come to the realisation that we were making art, yet so much of it would go undocumented, and who better to represent ourselves than us?"
