Angkush Poonye - Mauritius
Certified Chartered Accountant Angkush Poonye has always been passionate about poetry. His first poetry book, The Aapravasi's Legacy, was published in 2020. It narrates the journey of an Indian indentured labourer brought from India to work in a sugarcane field in Mauritius in the 1800s.
He’s working on a new collection of 10 - 15 poems that revolve around injustice, poverty and inequality to show a continent that has agency. “This grant represents a big boost for me. Mauritius represents just a dot on the globe and sometimes it is not even considered as part of Africa by many because it is an island in the middle of the ocean. This grant will help me to prove my belief as an African that my nation is also equal to other Africans, and we are united as a continent.”
