Sue Williamson - ArtThrob

ArtThrob is South Africa’s leading contemporary visual arts publication, reporting on the national arts scene and the involvement of South African artists in the international art world. ArtThrob has two missions: to develop a robust culture of thinking and writing about South African art that is free and accessible, and to support writers who dedicate their intellectual output to enriching the discourse of South African art. Their grant will enable them to hire a new cast of young arts writers and provide coverage of art in other Southern African countries.

They’ll also be able to provide coverage in languages other than English (such as isiXhosa and isiZulu) and finance experimentations in print media. “In a country where art books and art magazines in learning institutions are few and far between, this archive is important for students and teachers alike. Ultimately, ArtThrob presents critical and nuanced perspectives on African art by African writers that are free and available for anyone to use, both throughout South Africa and internationally,” said Williamson.
