The Native Question explores race, identity, and memory through the story of Tara’s upbringing as a mixed race South African Indian woman of Canadian and British descent. She grew up splitting her time between Stellenbosch, South Africa (the birthplace of Afrikaner Nationalism) and a liberal college town in the United States. 

Even as a young child, the difference in mindsets between these two towns was not lost on her, and she learned very quickly how beauty and status are very subjective.
