Africa is not a charity case, and it’s time global media stopped portraying it as one.
The BBC’s planned documentary celebrating Band Aid risks repeating the same outdated narrative that has long framed Africa as helpless and dependent. These stories erase African agency, overshadow local innovation, and shape how the world engages with the continent.
We’re calling on the BBC to:
- Pause the documentary’s release in its current form
- Include African voices and perspectives
- Acknowledge the stereotypes Band Aid perpetuated
- Commit to ethical, inclusive storytelling
